3 Must-Have Sensory Tools for ADHD and Autistic Kids

If you're raising an ADHD or autistic child, you already know that focus, calm, and cooperation rarely come from asking harder or explaining better. They come from the body. Before a child can sit still, listen, or manage a big feeling, their nervous system needs the right kind of input — movement, pressure, and resistance that most of us take for granted. These are the three sensory tools I reach for again and again in our house, because they target that need directly, instead of asking a dysregulated child to simply try harder.

Why Sensory Input Matters More Than Willpower


ADHD and autistic brains process sensory information differently. Many children are under-responsive to input and crave more movement, pressure, and “crunch” to feel switched on. Others are over-responsive, and everyday noise, texture, or unpredictability tips them into overwhelm. Often it's both, depending on the day. Two sensory systems do most of the heavy lifting here: the vestibular system (balance and head movement, based in the inner ear) and the proprioceptive system (deep pressure in the muscles and joints, which tells the brain where the body is in space).


Feed these two systems well and often, and you get a child who is more available for learning, more able to sit with a hard feeling, and less likely to escalate. Starve them, and you get the meltdowns, the chair-rocking, the constant fidgeting, the zoning out. This is the idea behind a “sensory diet” — small, regular doses of the right input built into the day, rather than saved for a crisis. The three tools below cover the three sensory needs I see most often in ADHD and autistic kids: movement, quiet fidgeting, and heavy work.


1. Balance Board — Movement Input for Focus and Body Awareness


A balance board gives the vestibular system exactly what it's asking for — constant, low-level movement — without a child ever leaving their spot. This is light, continuous proprioceptive input through the legs and feet, and for a lot of ADHD kids it's the difference between a body that's constantly hunting for movement — tipping the chair, kicking the table leg, getting up every two minutes — and one that can settle because it already has an outlet. Because the movement is silent and low-visibility, it also suits children who feel self-conscious about needing to fidget in front of classmates.

How to use it: they take seconds to fit — stretch the band across the two front chair legs, roughly ankle height. Most kids find their own way to use it: some push their feet against it rhythmically, others wrap a foot around it and rock gently.   • Morning: two to three minutes on the balance board before breakfast, to help a groggy or overloaded nervous system arrive in the day.

  • School or homework time: chair bands fitted to the desk or dining chair, so movement happens without a single interruption.

  • After school: a few minutes on the gymnastic bar as soon as they're through the door, before homework or big conversations are attempted.

  • Before bed: balance board or gentle hanging again, to help discharge the day before sleep.

A dysregulated body cannot listen, learn, or reason — no matter how good the instructions are. Meet the body's needs first, and the rest gets easier.
